About NavjyothiSevaSamithi

"By education, I mean an all-round drawing of the best in child and man in body, mind and spirit"
- Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

In our country of over 150 crore people, governed under the largest democracy in the world, education is acknowledged as the moving force towards the right path of progress and development that benefits all alike in the country. Education in its true sense, brings out the intellectual, moral and spiritual potential in an individual, contributing to making her/him a valuable human being in the society and before God.

Recognising its relevance, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act or Right to Education (RTE) Act was enacted in 2009 for the establishment of education as a fundamental right of every child from the age of six to fourteen years. However, research studies shows a wide gap between what is decreed and what is reality

“Navjyothi runs many projects for the children, as well as widows and elderly people in the slums and remote villages in the Chengalpattu/Kanchipuram District, Tamilnadu”

Even before the Act came into force, NavjyothiSevaSamithi had been actively involved in providing education and literacy to the children belonging from economically underprivileged families in and around Chennai City. NavjyothiSevaSamithi marked its beginning in the year 1995 by Mr. T. K. Joseph, a postgraduate in Sociology, with the aim to work for the upliftment of those who live on the fringes of our society. He took up the role of a social worker in the slums of Durga Nagar near Tambaram, Tamilnadu, where a majority of the population are daily wage labourers, small-time vendors, house-maids, and many others with meagre wages, struggling to make both ends meet.

In 1998, with the help of some philanthropists living in and around Chennai, a Trust was formed and was duly registered as a Public Charitable Trust Act 1976 vide Reg No.582/98 dated 08.05.1998.

Navjyothi strives to build a society where the deprived and the neglected stand shoulder to shoulder with others in confidence and optimism, by helping them to grow spiritually and psychologically, enabling them to enjoy their basic rights, such as basic education, food, health and spiritual growth.

With these objectives in focus, Navjyothi runs many projects for the children, as well as widows’ and elderly people in the slums and remote villages of Chengalpattu/Kancheepuram District of Tamilnadu. The projects are run with the support of several philanthropists -from all over India and abroad.

The Trustees of Navjyothi strongly believe and strictly follow transparency and accountability in the management of the Trust, its funds, its institution, and all its activities.
